Madden 2011 Ian Cummings warns online quitters

    August 14th, 2010

Ian Cummings, Madden 2011 Director updates on his Twitter a solution in the works for online quitting in Madden 2011 and he doesn’t hold any punches letting them know it will not end well for them at all.

    Twitter - Home_ian23

What Ian is referring to is a big problem with Madden 2011 by allowing anyone to quit as long as it is in the first half and not recording the outcome. So quitters can get out of a game without being penalized with a loss while the person quit on does not get the win or even the opportunity to play out against the CPU for the win, Hopefully Ian means business, what I thank they will do is make it so quitters will get a Lose no matter what half it is if they quit and go after those players with high DNF% (Did not finish) 40% or better, and either wipe there bogus records or just ban them all together because that’s the only thing that gets recorded when a player quits but either way this will be eliminated with the first online patch( and fix some other things too *cough* strategy pad and Defense)  for the game soon to be release in a week or so.

NFL Player Reappears after Gaming Addiction

    August 6th, 2010

I came across this story earlier today and thought it was interesting enough to pass along. Defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock, an All-American at Ohio State and 2007 third round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts suddenly retired at age 24 after his rookie season. Yesterday he was signed by the Seattle Seahawks and now details on what led to his retirement and how he has since overcome those difficulties have emerged. Pitcock suffered from depression which led him to retire and shut himself off from the world resorting to video games to pass the time.

“I just stayed in my apartment and did nothing.”Well, not exactly nothing. “I ended up using video games as my out, I got sucked into that,” he said. “I got lost to the world.”…..“I’m actually going to start some kind of charity to help kids who are addicted to video games,” he said. “I got to a point where I broke and burned many video games trying to quit. But that was my outing, so once I got rid of that and realized I could start eating heathly and exercising and do all that, I got back on track.”

I don’t see the point of his story as being anti-gaming, but instead shows just how crippling depression can be and in his case it led him to shelter himself and use video games as an outlet. Needless to say any addiction can be severely detrimental and judgment of priorities can be lost. In this case Pitcock is getting a second chance and can use his experience to educate others who may be facing similar troubles.

    DLC Breaks Unwritten Rules

    May 28th, 2010

Why is it that some DLC makes you wonder just what the developers were thinking?  Should I really need to buy more armor or weapons to enjoy a game ?  While some DLC hits their target dead on, others leave me wondering WTF.

I’ll start with some obvious examples of what I consider top-drawer spot-on DLC.

    • Guitar Hero / RockBand Music Tracks
    • First Person Shooter Map Packs
    • Racing Game Car Packs and Track Packs

These are perfect examples because they follow the rules.  Not my rules, and there are no universal rules for DLC, but they follow the rules of the game they are made for.  Music tracks expand Guitar Hero and RockBand without changing the rules of the game.  Map Packs for Halo are just new environments to play the same game with the same rules.  Car and Track Packs… you see where this is going.  DLC should stick to the rules of the original game while expanding the experience in some way.

Here are a few that I feel just didn’t hit the mark.

Fallout 3 – Operation Anchorage: Bethesda created a masterpiece when they rebooted the Fallout franchise.  They created a huge, immersive world of ruble, danger and destruction, and then with the first DLC – they pull you completely away from everything that makes the game special.  If I wanted a modern day shooter where I sneak around and kill enemy soldiers, there are many to choose from.  Bethesda broke the rules and took me away from the things I love in the Fallout universe.  Fortunately they seemed to recognize this and all of the four following additions where rooted solidly in the retro-future world of Fallout.  I can only hope that Obsidian Entertainment will have additional content available of this caliber for Fallout: New Vegas.

Dead Space: There are many weapon and suit upgrades that you can buy for this game but what do they add?  Do I really care what color my suit is in a single player game?  No.  I’m doin’ fine with my standard issue gear without the scorpions painted on it.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Dead Space.  It’s a brilliant game and the sound design is ground-breaking – but give me DLC that gives me more of what I love – the game itself; not painted suits and weapons.  I hope Visceral Games will  rethink the DLC strategy for Dead Space 2.

Burnout Paradise – Cops and Robbers: With all the wonderful DLC that Criterion Games gave us for Burnout Paradise, this one broke the rules.  All of the car packs were great, Big Surf Island is amazing, and the Party Pack was an expansion of the game that didn’t technically break the rules, it just let you play the same game in a party atmosphere with up to 8 players.  And I have not forgotten that the first expansions which gave us more cars, more game modes, and even motorcycles were free.  However, Cops and Robbers requires all the drivers to own the pack to be able to play.  Never before in Paradise did I need the other players to purchase something before I could enjoy it.  The saving grace of this pack is that it has 33 police vehicles included with it which are very nice, but the new game mode breaks the rules.

BorderlandsMad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot : Two of the DLC packages from Take-Two Interactive gave us more storyline in new environments and they followed the rules.  Of course I’m talking about The Secret Armory of General Knoxx and The Zombie Island of Doctor Ned.  Both are chock full of bite-size quests and follow the structure of the rest of the game and best of all – every time you exit the game your progress is saved.  Mad Moxxi, on the other hand, much like her personality, is cut from completely different cloth.  It takes hours to grind through wave after wave in each arena – and if you die – you start over.  Sorry Moxxi but you break all the rules.

Metro 2033: Even before releasing their first DLC for this game, THQ said that DLC for the game would not expand the story line.  Instead, THQ announced the following about their forthcoming Ranger Pack.  ”The Ranger Pack adds new weapons, new achievements and the deadly ‘Ranger Mode’ game rules.”  It looks like they are only changing the rules as to play the game again with fewer resources.  We’ll have to wait and see if there is more substance to this expansion.  Can’t we just have some more tunnels and stations to explore?

Perhaps some games just won’t allow a new storyline to be snapped onto the existing experience without diluting it.  Such may be the case with linear games like Metro 2033 and Dead Space, but open world games such as Grand Theft Auto, Borderlands, Fallout and now Red Dead Redemption really allow for great DLC possibilities, just as long as they follow the rules.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 :Could Be Considered The Best Game Ever

    May 27th, 2010

If you consider yourself a gamer, you’ll have most likely heard some Super Mario Galaxy 2 praise over the last few days. Recent sequels by Nintendo such as New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Legend of Zelda : Spirit Tracks have been labelled as “lazy” and “uninspired” by critics, which naturally made me sceptical about Super Mario Galaxy 2’s reception. Back in 2007, the original Super Mario Galaxy received an incredible amount of love and companion, and quite rightly so; Super Mario Galaxy was a phenomenal game that was so imaginative, so brilliant, it couldn’t help but be adored by the fans. However, just as EDGE gave it a [10], I knew they’d be no need for concern and by the looks of these reviews, it may just be the best game ever created:

    Edge Magazine : 10

“This isn’t a game that redefines the genre: this is one that rolls it up and locks it away.”

    IGN : 10

“Consider me “wowed.” Again. Yes, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is more of what made the original so amazingly good: brilliant gravity platfoming. Incredibly tight and responsive controls. Fantastic musical score. But it’s not a “me too” experience — a significant majority of this sequel is brand new.”

    GameTrailers : 97

“There is more creativity in some single stages in this game than in entire other games. It’s a bit familiar, but all the fat has been cut away to expose a pure gaming core. There’s something for just about everyone and games that we can truly recommend to almost everyone are rare.”

    Destructoid : 10

“They poured in the same creativity and imagination that made me fall in love with games like Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World. To me it feels like they finally felt the freedom and comfort in 3D platforming to get back to that Nintendo magic that we all remember. The end result is a galaxy of surprise after surprise, all coming together in a game that tops even my past favorites, making this the best Mario game Nintendo has released.”

    Nintendo Life : 10

“Every once in a while a video game comes along that’s just so spectacular that it ends up defining the very system it’s released on and raises the bar by which all other games in the series and genre will be judged. It’s safe to say that game has now arrived on the Wii console.”

    games(TM) – 10

“No matter which side of the gaming coin you come from, this whole new universe of planets is the most inventive, exuberant and, yes, fun set of challenges and diversions yet seen in the platform game genre. It miraculously outclasses a game that many believed could not be bettered, and once again leaves us wondering just how close Nintendo’s bar has come to reaching its theoretical peak.”

    GameSpot – 10

“Super Mario Galaxy 2 is simply an outstanding game. It never rests on its laurels for a second, constantly presenting new objectives and mechanics to push you to never before seen places. Even the two-player mode offers new abilities and delights, making it even more fun to play with a friend by your side. Everything is so well designed and so entertaining that it’s easy to get sucked into this world for hours. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is so phenomenal that it’s difficult to imagine where Mario could possibly go in the future. But that’s hardly your concern now. Mario proves that he is still the king of fun.”.

    1UP – A

“If you loved the first Mario Galaxy, but you’re wary that this follow-up is a mere shade of its predecessor, than rest assured that this fan-service laden sequel feels just as new as the first Mario Galaxy. Everything from the sweeping orchestral score (which even includes new arrangements of classic tunes thrown in simply to tickle the nostalgia of long-time fans) to the ingenious layout of traps, puzzles and platforming speaks to a level of craftsmanship that only comes from years of refinement and reinvention. And if you’ve yet to try out Mario on the Wii (or only played New Super Mario Bros. Wii), than Galaxy 2 proves how good design can make even the seemingly complicated, gravity-defying acrobatics of Mario’s world feel completely effortless.”

…It pretty much goes on like that, I think it’s safe to say, without even playing it, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is one amazing game. Just today it topped Gamerankings’ highscore, Ocarina of Time, making it critically, the best game of all time. I didn’t think Nintendo could improve on Super Mario Galaxy, but obviously, they have. Proof that those old dogs at Nintendo, still know their tricks.

Get The Crackdown 2 Demo Early

    May 27th, 2010

Orb hunting was a pretty crippling addiction in the original Crackdown. Now that Crackdown 2 is on the horizon, we’re all eagerly waiting to get our hands on the demo to help feed that addiction. As if reading our minds, Microsoft is giving us the chance to get the demo early while still feeding that need to find them all.

    crackdown 2 orbOrb Hunt

The first clue is located at the Amazon page for Crackdown 2 at the end of the video. You can use the Microsoft Tag Reader on your smart phone to read it. You will be taken to a page where you input your date of birth and your mobile phone number. After that, you will get a text asking if you want to receive clues to the next orb location.

crackdown orb huntScan This With Your Tag Reader

A total of 5 orbs need to be found. Once you do that, you should be sent a code to download the demo. From what I have read, the codes are not going out just yet so you better get on the hunt, agent.

Rumor: Project Natal priced at $150 stand alone; bundled with Arcade for $300

    May 26th, 2010

If a report by Edge proves accurate (wait till E3), then Pachter’s estimation that Project Natal will cost less than an average game is off. Instead, a source backed by Edge has alleged a $150 price point (with plenty of room to drop) for the forthcoming Xbox 360 motion tech camera — or $300 when bundled with the Xbox 360 Arcade console. Additionally, the source has suggested an October 26 worldwide release — give or take “a few weeks.”

A.P.B (All Points Bulletin)- Intro Cinematic

    May 26th, 2010

The story takes place in the town of San Paro which has been reeling from crime for the past 2 decades after the assassination of mayor John Derran. When his daughter Jane Derran is elected into power, she enacts the City Security Act which essentially allows for armed vigilantism against the city’s rising gang problems.

Sounds hella fun to me, but I guess we’ll all have to wait until June 29th to find out…UK gamers, you’ll have to wait until the beginning of July for your ABP fix.
